HEADPHONE LISTENING RECOMMENDED

In March & April 2015 I was one of three artists selected for Site Sit's pilot project, Village Halls - bringing contemporary art to rural communities.

'The Sounds & Silences of Llansteffan' was presented as a mixed-media installation of photographs, research materials (including maps and a vinyl record) and an edition of 50 free mix CDs.

This 55-minute CD is a site-specific mix of songs, interviews, field recordings and personal narration. Rather than simply soundtracking the listener's immediate surroundings, the CD attempts to highlight and confront the sounds and silences of Llansteffan, both past and present.

The third track, The Castle, features the song Llanstephan Hill by Amory Kane. The installation included a bootleg copy of Amory Kane's 1970 album 'Just To Be There' from which the song is taken.

It describes the village and its surroundings in particular detail. However, none of the village's current residents, including those who have lived in Llansteffan for decades, had heard of the song or its author before.

Kane has links to various well-known bands - Led Zeppelin being the most impressive amongst the villagers I spoke to. These bands have either recorded songs he wrote or played with Kane himself - Llanstephan Hill features Dave Pegg of Fairport Convention and Jethro Tull on bass. However, there is very little information available online that relates to Kane directly.

The villagers were instantly fascinated with Kane and his song about Llansteffan and this intrigue was the perfect way into the project, provoking visitors into thinking about the aural history of their environment differently.

I hope the rest of the CD takes this curiosity even further.
