Variations on Broken Piano,
track released September 24, 2015
In 2010, a month before flying the nest, I went to France with my oldest friend Jemima. We stayed in the near-complete barn conversion of an old farmhouse.
I remember chain smoking whilst rowing myself aimlessly around a small pond, the sounds of mice in the walls keeping us up at night, rustic chests in the corners of rooms we couldn't open and a excitable dog.
The living room had a lot of moths and books in it. Amongst the French books was an English copy of William Blake's Songs of Innocence and Experience which I read for the first time and, in the same room, a broken and out-of-tune piano with a lot of sticky keys. For a week I played one tune - the only thing I could get out of it that sounded nice to my ears.
Recorded on a Creative Zen X-Fi in a barn in France in the summer of 2010.
